WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

FAIRVIEW At the June meeting of the Fairview Womens Institute. Mrs Kelland presided over a fair attendance of members. It was decided that donations be made to the Levels Bay in the winter show, and the Stratheona Hostel. Invitations were received from the Otipua and Pareora Institutes to their birthday parties. Members were entertained by a party from Timaru. The competitions resulted as follows: Peg bag: Miss Mercer 1. Mrs F. Smith 2. Premier bloom: Miss Mercer 1. Miss E. Dale 2, Mrs T. Campbell 3. Coffee cake: Miss R. Butchers 1. Miss Mercer 2. The he esses were: Mesdames Crombie, Campbell, H. B. Dale, A. R. Dale.

HILTON

The eighth birthday party of the Hilton Women’s Institute took the form of a concert and dance. Miss Omelvina welcomed all present. Items were given by Miss Crotty (pianoforte solos), Miss Charles (songs), Miss Benbow (step dances). Mr Mayne (humorous solos), Mr Brosnahan (pianoaccordion), and Mrs H. Brosnahan (songs). A play was presented oy members of the Institute. The hall was then cleared for dancing. Music being supplied by Mr R. Meredith. Mr Mayne and Mrs Brosnahan playing extras. Mr H. Brosnahan and Mr Tindall were M.C’s. After supper the birthday cake, which had been given by Mrs B. Patrick was cut by the president, who called on visitors from sister institutes to cut a slice. Visitors from Geraldine, Orari, Rangatira Valley and Winchester Institutes and a member of the Woman’s Division conveyed greetings from their respective Institutes. A car naming competition was won by Mrs Friend and Mr Jack Parish.

Prizes for most points for competitions held during the year were presented by Mrs Brosnahan as follows.--Class A. Mrs Beaven 1. Mrs Toomey 2, Miss Scott 3. Class B. Mrs C. Wilson 1, Mrs Baynes 2, Mrs Brenton 3. Best b’oom: Mrs Beaven 1. Mrs Baynes 2
