SPACE SELLING WELL

Main Building Booked Out Meeting of Winter Show , Committee “I am very pleased to report that the space in the main part of the building is completely sold,’ ’said the president of the South Canterbury Industrial Exhibition and Winter Show Association at a meeting of the committee last night. Present—Messrs B L. Blodorn (president), W. H. Hall, M. H. Richards, C. M. Lagan, M. B. Richards, G. H. Andrews, C. E. Kerr, J. M. Jenkins, C. W. Wood, J. B. Wood and J. Moyel “It is a very pleasing report, especially as the Show is three weeks off,” added Mr Blodorn, who explained that at the corresponding period last year the Association had also sold space in the front portion of the building. It was possible, however, that some of that space would be sold before the Show opened. Mr M. H. Richards asked if the association had as much space as last year. It was hard to say, replied the chairman. He did not think that there was as much room this year. It was pleasing to know, however, that all the space in the building had been sold. Mr Blodorn said that they could not tell the actual number of entries received, but they were coming in so freely that the office staff had hardly been able to cope with the rush during the last day or so.

The chairman explained that the committee had not yet received advice as to which member of the Cabinet would be opening the Show. It was proposed that the opening be on similar lines to last year. The Mayor of Timaru (Mr W. G. Tweedy) and members of Parliament for the district would speak, while the Mayor of Geraldine (Mr J. R. Lack) would speak on behalf of the boroughs of Geraldine. Temuka and Waimate. Mr M. B. Richards, on behalf of the Building Committee, reported that the builders had already started their work and matters were well forward. The chairman of the Grain and Produce Committee (Mr C. H. Coxhead) reported that it appeared that the Agricultural Department’s exhibit would be more extensive than that displayed at the Dunedin Show. Arrangements were being made for various lectures. Geraldine Action Regretted The Canterbury Education Board advised that it would grant time off to children in Timaru and to those in rural schools within convenient reacn to enable them to attend the Winter Show. “It is very gratifying to have the support of the Board,” said Mr Andrews. It was a great pity he said, that the Geraldine District High School Committee had decided not to give its children a holiday to visit the Show, especially as the Show would be of such great educational value. The decision was made by four votes to three and it was to be deplored that the children were r.ot coming in. “As our show is of great educational benefit to the children of the whole district, I would like them all to have the chance of seeing the exhibition,” said Mr Andrews. Last year the epidemic prevented Geraldine from attending, and this year the association would be glad to welcome them. The Railway Department was arranging cheap fares for school parties and the railway ticket admitted the holder to the Show. Mr J. B. Wood, chairman of the Transport Committee, explained that circulars had been sent to all schools advising them of the arrangements, and it was proposed to have interviews with the head teachers. The forthcoming visit of the Indian hockey team was mentioned by Mr Blodorn, wha said that the South Canterbury Hockey Association was giving valuable co-operation in coupling the Winter Show as an additional attraction to country people visiting Timaru for the match. Mr Andrews reported that the organiser (Mr H. H. Fraser), and he had paid a visit to the Dunedin Winter Show and had been impressed by the fine display and the manner in which they had been received. The Dunedin Association would repay the visit.

It was decided that a letter of thanks be sent to the Dunedin Association for the hospitality extended. Mr A. M. Paterson was appointed a vice-president of the Association.
