WOMEN’S DIVISION

SOUTHBURN BRANCH At the June meeting of the Southburn branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs Chamberlain presided over a good attendance, and welcomed a new member also several visitors. The secretary was asked to write lo Mrs Youdale whose husband is ill in hospital. It was decided not to send a delegate to the annual conference in Wellington. Mrs Robt. Parry reported on a meeting held in connection with the Winter Show. Members were asked to hand in arts and crafts for the St. Andrews Bay. Gifts of various kinds were brought in to be forwarded ‘.o Stratheona Hostel. Sister Adams gave an interesting talk on her trip to the Coronation, which was much enjoyed. A vote of thanks to Sister Adams was proposed by Mrs H. Evans and carried. The competitions resulted as follows.—Seniors, flower: Mrs Chamberlain 1. Mrs Robt. Parry 2, Mrs Rupt. Parry and Mrs A. Ward 3. Shortbread: Mrs Armstrong 1, Mrs A. Ward 2. Mrs Rupt. Parry 3. Paper hat made at meeting: Miss M. Caird. Juniors, flower: Miss M. Ward 1, Miss W. Bell 2. Shortbread: Miss A. Stowell 1. M. Ward 2. Paper hat: Miss Myra Evans. TIMARU BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Timaru Branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs L. Bell presided over a fair attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr T. D. Burnett M.P. in the death of his sister. Sympathy was expressed with Mesdames Armstrong and Newbegin who are ill. The president welcomed new members, also Mrs Ross from Lumsden, and Mesdames P. Brosnahan and Newall. The following members were appointed class stewards for the forthcoming winter show.—Mesdames Morrison, Ross, J. Stewart, and Harvey, Misses D. Stocker, J. Talbot and C. Bell. It was agreed to hold a girls’ educational week this year. Mrs Harvey was appointed the Division's delegate on the National Council of Women. Mrs Evans reported that Mrs Drake the Dominion president would be visiting Timaru at an early date. It was decided to hold the annual concert in Timaru about the third week in July. Mrs Pike offered to arrange a programme of musical items. The following gave prizes for the competitions. Mesdames Evans, Caird, Talbot and Newton. Mrs Evans gave the competition cake. It was agreed to invite the presidents of the various W.D. branches. Mrs J. Caird was appointed delegate to the annual Dominion conference in Wellington. The competitions resulted as follows.—Premier bloom: Miss D. Bell 1. Handwork, oven cloth: Miss D. Stocker 1. Jar apple jelly: Mrs Divan 1, Mrs Hawke and Miss Connelly equal 2, Mrs Stocker 3. ORARI BRIDGE BRANCH The Orari Bridge branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its seventh birthday at a social evening held in the hall. The president, Mrs H. Coulter, assisted by Mrs F, E. South (vice-president) welcomed the visitors. The evening passed pleasantly with games, competitions and dancing. A recitation by Mr Buchan was very much enjoyed. Mr Buchan also expressed pleasure at being present. It was a happy coincidence that both he and Mrs Buchan were attending as presidents of the Soutn Canterbury executives of the Farmers’ Union and Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. As his term of office ended next day he felt that the occasion was unique. . The candles on the birthday cake, which had been artistically iced by Mrs R. Tagg, were lit by Mrs J. Reid, past president. Mr V. Stonyer, president of the Young Farmers’ Club, blew them out after which Mrs Buchan as president of the South Canterbury executive was asked to cut the first slice. Mrs Euchan said it gave her much pleasure to do this, and in thanking the branch for the invitation wished it every success in the future. Each visiting president cut a slice and conveyed the greetings of her organisation. The prizes were then presented by Mrs Buchan as follows—Cup given by Mrs J. Reid for mast points gained in the competitions held throughout the year. Mrs J. Johnstone; runner-up, Mrs F. E. South. Quarterly prizes— Best bloom: Mrs L. Coulter. General competition. Mrs J. Johnstone. GERALDINE BRANCH There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Branch of the Women's Division. Mrs W. Watson presided and' welcomed all present. Mrs Mcllroy was elected a new member. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Parr for having given an enlarged copy of the creed to the Division. Correspondence was received from Miss Violet McMillan in connection with the A.C.E. classes held in the Geraldine district. Mrs A. Bruce was chosen as delegate to the conference a" Wellington. A discussion was held on mother’s week to be held in Christchurch some time in June, and a delegate will be chasen later. Mrs E. Elworthy gave a report from the winter show committee and solicited the assistance of members. Mrs R. A.’ Dixon gave an interesting report en an address given by Miss Trent at T' ■ :ru on the National Council of Women. A competition was held during the afternoon for the prettiest coat hanger, after which the coat hangers were sold to augment the library funds Mrs Burrows, Te Moana, gave a very interesting and instructive demonstration of potting and salting butter Mrs Burrows answered many questions and a vote of thanks was moved by Mrs A. Bruce. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Bruce, Nolan and MissRule. The results of the competitions were as follows. —Prettiest coat hanger: Miss E. Sherratt 1, Mrs W. Watson 2 and 3. Flowers, Single bloom: Miss McLean 1 and 2, Mrs Bayley 3. Cluster: Mrs E. Elworthy 1, Mrs R. A. Dixon 2.
