LINE-OUT PLAY

RULES SHOULD EE STUDIED Line-out infringements are numerous but a study of the rv’.es would assist materially in bringing about much needed improvement. The forwards in particular should note the following: — “If at a throw in from touch, before the ball Is played, he stand or move in front of a line at right angles to the touc.i lines through the place where ball went into touch he is offside.” —A penalty kick to be awarded. “No player shall charge, push or hold an opponent at the line out on the ball being thrown in from touch.” This is classed as obstruction. If lineout men would pay more attention to jumping for the ball and less to attempts to push or obstruct an opponent, line-out play would improve. Flayers should note that the use of elbows and arms to obstruct the view of an opponent or to push him in the face in an apparently accidental manner is obstruction in the line-out, and leads to ♦ rouble.

A player who gains possession of the ball in the line-out and is seized by opponents so that he cannot pass or play the ball should release it immediately so that it falls to the ground. Failure to do so only slows up the game.

The man throwing in the ball must throw the bai 1 in straight so that it will alight at least five yards from the touch line. The penalty for failure to do these is a scrum ten yards from the side-line. Repeated infringements may lead to a penalty kick being awarded. The player throwing in the ball must have both feet in touch, otherwise the ball must be thrown in again. Line umpires should note that the flag is kept well raised only for the player throwing the ball in has his foot in the field of play or the wrong player throwing in the ball.

Deliberate Throwing

Players should note that if a player wilfully knock or throw the ball from the field of play into touch, touch-in-goal, or over his own dead-ball line, the opposing team shall be awarded a penalty kick at the place where such kick or throw occurred Finally, a player may run up from behind the line out and take the ball from a throw in if there be a gap but should he run into an opponent whist doing so, a penalty kick for charging must be awarded. Representative Team Members of the representative team to meet Bay of Plenty on Saturday next, with the emergencies, are requested to attend a practice at Fraser Park to-morrow evening at 7.30. Brand Injured G. Brand, the Springbok Rugby fullback, was injured in a friendly match recently. As a result he was expected to be out of the game for at least six weeks. Exciting Finishes Of recent years the annual match between Wellington and Taranaki at Hawera has become noted for exciting finishes. In 1934 Wellington won 13-11. and for the nevt seasons 2 points only separated the teams, the results being: 1935, Tarankai won 11-9; 1936. Wellington won 18-16. Tindill “ potting” a goal right on time; 1937, Wellington won 11-9. This season the result was even closer. Taranaki winning 9-8; a potted goal from a mark deciding the game in the last few minutes (says “The Dominion”).
