A TERM IN PRISON
STOWAWAY FOUND IN NIAGARA By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. June 13. Three ex-stewards of the liner Orford were arrested on the arrival of the Niagara to-day and charged before Mr W. R. McKean S.M.. with stowing away at Sydney. They pleaded guilty. They were: John Keenan, -ged 20 years; Reginald Gilbert Graham, aged 21 years; and Lawrence Victor Phurman, aged 27 years. The police said they deserted the Orford in Australia last April and decided to try to return to England. This was the first stage of the journey. The Shipping Company was asking that in each case a fare of £7 should be paid, but there was little prospect of getting it. “It looks as though the Shipping Company should have exercised more care in allowing persons aboard the vessel prior to sailing,” remarked Mr McKean, who sent the three men to prison for 21 days.
