OFFICIAL ORGAN WANTED

Beekeepers Are Not Satisfied Journal of Agriculture Suggested The honey producers of the Dominion are hoping to have a section of the Journal of the Department of Agriculture devoted to information regarding their industry, judging by a discussion which took place at ti»e annual conference of the National Beekeepers’ Association yesterday. Dissatisfaction with the organ previously used by the Association was expressed in a remit advanced by the Taranaki Branch as follows: “That in view of the misrepresentation of the general views of the National Beekeepers' Association in the publication New Zealand Honey Bee, that the conference endeavour to make arrangements for publication of the views and policy of the Association elsewhere.” The Gore Branch also urged that the Association adopt some monthly journal as the official organ of the beekeepers. “It has been almost a bitter pill to receive the journal and then have to pay for it.” said Mr Herron referring to the “New Zealand Honey Bee.” Mr L. Irwin recalled that in an address the previous day. Mr A. H. Honeyfield (representative of the Internal Marketing Department) had referred to the possibility of the beekeepers obtaining a section of the Journal of Agriculture. The secretary read a telegram from the editor of the Journal of Agriculture expressing inability to make that organ the official one of the Association until he knew tl e Association's requirements, and suggesting that th’-y be submitted for consideration. Approach of Department Mr Honeyfield explained that no official approaches had been made to the Department of Agriculture regarding the inclusion of a beekeepeis’ section in the journal, but if a request was made the matter could be gone into. Mr Irwin said the “New Zealand Honey Bee” was controlled by Mr P. A. Hillary and the Association l.ad no say in the conduct of it. That was quite right, but Mr Hillary did not represent the industry, and it was essential that the Association should have some journal in which it could express its opinions. He suggested that the matter be left to a committee of men qualified to make the necessary arrangements with the Journal of Agriculture. A suggestion that, as a levy was to be made on all Loney, the producers might consider the prevision of a suitable journal one of the services the Internal Marketing Department might provide, was made by Mr Honeyfield. The Taranaki remit was withdrawn and the Gore one carried.
