REPORT ON ELECTIONS
VOTES FOR ONE CANDIDATE A feature of the Mackenzie County elections was the number of votes "plumped’’ for one candidate. That fact is mentioned by the engineerclerk iMr D. Jeune) in his report for to-day's meeting of the Council. Of the total votes, 35 per cent were recorded for one candidate. The Tekapo riding members were returned unopposed, and in the remaining three ridings, 10 candidates offered for six vacancies; in the Albury riding, 77 per cent of the ratepayers voted and exercised 79 per cent of the votes; in Opuha 731 per cent voted and exercised 74 per cent of the votes; and in Fairlie 56 per cent voted and exercised 60 per cent of the votes. One other feature of the elections was the diverse combinations in which votes were exercised. In the Albury riding there were 10 possible ways in which votes could be exercised, and every way was used, and the same applied to the other riding elections. The report details the work done throughout the county during the month; in the early part, all gangs and units had been engaged in repairing flood damage. Contractors had started work on Cox’s bridge, the first contract under the bridge building loan. Difficulties had been experienced in obtaining steel for the second contract. Tenders had been received for the third and fourth contracts, and the plans for the Clayton bridge were almost complete.
