SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY
DR. W. H. UNWIN TO BE HONOURED Decision of Leading Citizens Upwards of 50 business and professional men assembled in the C.F.C.A. boardroom last evening for the purpose of arranging a function at which public recognition could be made of the private and community service rendered by Dr. W. H. Unwin during the last 40 years. The meeting, which was convened by Messrs G. S. Cray, J. P. Newman, W. Thomas and Dr. J. Campbell McKenzie, was presided over by Mr Cray. The chairman apologised for the hurried manner in which the meeting had been called, but said that Dr. Unwin would be leaving Timaru on Saturday for Auckland. The object of the meeting was to request the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) to convene a public meeting so that opportunity could be taken to express to Dr. Unwin the appreciation which was universally felt of his long service to the town. The Mayor was not in a position to call a meeting 'without a request from the friends of Dr. Unwin, and it was to make that request that the meeting had been called. Mr F. Robertson had consented to act as secretary, and Mr Mervyn Raymond and Mr F. M. Raymond as treasurers. On the motion of Mr W. Thomas, seconded by Mr J. P. Newman, it was decided to ask the Mayor to convene a meeting in the Bay Hall on Friday night for the purpose of handing to Dr. Unwin an appreciation of his public and community service. The Mayor said that it gave him the greatest of pleasure to accede to the request, and he would be delighted to co-operate with the committee in making fitting recognition of Dr. Unwin’s services to the town. I The chairman said that it had been suggested that donations, which would be purely voluntary and not solicited, would be limited from 2 6 to £l. A suggestion was made by Dr. McKenzie that some of the money should be utilised in procuring a bronze plaque of Dr. Unwin. This could be hung in the hospital, of which he was superintendent 38 years ago, and with which he had been associated ever since. If this was done, it would be a lasting tribute to his work. The proposal was discussed, and it i was decided to make a monetary presentation to Dr. Unwin and to request I him to use it at his discretion. At the same time the suggestion regard- | ing the plaque is to be placed before I him. The arranging of the function was [ left to the committee, and a number present signified their willingness to accept donations. Those present were Messrs W. Thomas. J. P. Newman. Dr McKenzie.
