Only a few more than half of the people holding motor driving licenses issued by the Christchurch City Council last year have so far taken out licenses for 1938-39. The licenses issued to-day numbered 701, bringing the total to 8518 out of 16,005 issued last year, so approximately 7500 people lay themselves open to prosecution if they take their cars out on the road to-morrow. The 8518 people who have taken out new licenses were not all drivers last year. The number includes about 140 persons who qualified for licenses by tests during May. New motor licenses taken out on 7 lay 31 were 1447. making a total of 11,971. This total was greater by more than 1000 than the total at May 31 last year, which was 10,681.
