PLEASANT POINT TOWN BOARD

FIRST MEETING Chairman Re-elected At the first meeting of the new Pleasant Point Town Board last night, those present were: Messrs M. F. Maze, E. Halstead. W. C. Grant, T. Kelliher, F. E. G. Malcolmson and J. Munro. Mr Maze was unanimously re-elected chairman, and he was congratulated by Messrs Halstead and Grant on topping the poll at the Board election, and also for the very competent way he had managed the Board’s affairs. Mr Roberts was re-appointed deputychairman. A welcome was extended by the chairman to the two new members, Messrs Munro and Malcolmson, and he congratulated the former members who had been returned. The Works Committee is to report on the question of installing a street light at McCulloch’s corner. A petition asking for a light was received from 13 ratepayers. In commenting on the request, the chairman said a commission had visited Pleasant Point investigating local body maters, and had stated that too much money was being spent on street lighting; in view of the population, it had been considered that there were too many lights. Unemployed Men The District Employment Officer (Mr E. C. J. Foot) advised that six men were to report for work under Scheme 13, last Monday. The subsidy would be on the basis of £4 a week, the Board being required to find the difference. Mr George Smith was appointed foreman. The secretary of the South Canterbury Hospital Board wrote stating that the levy payable by the Board in 1938-39 would be £l2B/2/4. The credit balance at the bank, together with cash in hand, totalled £143/10 10. It was decided to call for applications for the position of caretaker for the hall, cemetery and domain. Mr Halstead said bicycles were being ridden on footpaths, and on his motion it was decided to bring the matter to the attention of the police. An inspection of Simmons's corner is to be made by the Works Committee with a view to having visibility improved for motor traffic. If gorse is not removed from road frontages, it is intended to put men on to do the work and charge the cost to the ratepayers concerned. Committees appointed were: Works— Messrs T. Kelliher, J. Munro and W. C. 'Grant. Hall—Messrs E. Halstead and F. E. G. Malcolmson. Domain—Messrs A. H. Roberts and E. Halstead. Cemetery—Messrs T. Kelliher and W. C. Grant. In compliance with an invitation forwarded by the Rev. W. McNeur, it was decided that Board members should attend Divine service at St. John’s Presbyterian Church on June 19.
