HIGH SCHOOL BOARDS
REQUEST FOR CONSERVATION OF POWERS By Telegraph—Association WELLINGTON. May S. The Education Committee of the House of Representatives has concluded the hearing of evidence and will now commence its deliberations. These will not embrace the clause dealing with religious instruction in schools, consideration of which has been postponed in the meantime. Evidence was given to-day by Mr E. T. Norris on behalf of the Seconrary Old Boys’ Associations, asking that the powers of the boards be not reduced but carefully conserved. He emphasised the importance of personal interest as a factor in the success of secondary schools. A strong attitude was expressed in regard to the matter of staff appointments. The ideal from the old boys’ point of view was interest in the school, character and personality rather than personal ambitions as the incentive. They deplored a method of appointment where the boards would be forced to accept applicants merely on academic distinctions. It was asked that the present administration by boards and headmasters of boarding establishments be not disturbed.
