SEASON ENDS

Track Meeting Held At Temuka Empire Games Runners Attend The track running season was brought to a close on Saturday afternoon when the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club staged one of the most successful meetings of the year. After a fall of three inches of rain, the Temuka Domain was sodden but in spite of that fact some good times were recorded. Although light showers fell, the weather was mainly fine and there was a large attendance. Although fields were thinned out by the unsettled weather and the state of the track, the quality of the entry was unusually high, three Empire Games representatives—C. H. Matthews (Christchurch), three and six miles champion, T. Allen, Otago distance champion, and H. J. Tyrie, Otago quarter mile champion and recordholder—being present. In addition a large contingent of athletes from Christchurch, Dunedin, Ashburton, and Timaru competed. Another provincial champion competing was A. E. Redmond, holder of the Auckland discus title. Chief interest centred in a special invitation mile and a half handicap in which Matthews, Allen, R. Colston (Caversham). R. Taylor (Temuka), C. Cameron and I. Gillon (Timaru) started. Allen gave Matthews pace for the first half mile and then withdrew, Taylor and Gillon holding the lead from Colston and Cameron till the mile, when Matthews closed the gap. Colston withdrew, leaving Taylor and Cameron to carry the champion along. Matthews overtook Cameron in the next lap and hit the front in the last, but Taylor hung on gamely and was only 12 yards away when Matthews broke the tape in 7min. 9 4-ssec. Matthews’s lap times were 56sec., 70sec., 72 2-ssec., 77 2-ssec., mile in 4.42. The race marked the last appearance in South Canterbury of C. Cameron, South Canterbury mile champion, who leaves next month for England to join the Royal Air Force.

Limit Too Big Allan made his first appearance in the half-mile in which he conceded 75 yards to J. D. Spillane, the young Temuka runner, the only other starters being G. D. Kelly (Ashburton) and A. Moyes (Timaru). From the outset it was apparent that, in view of the heaviness of the track, Allen had been set a difficult task and, after running a good first lap. he slowed up and did not exert himself to take second place to Spillane, the time being 2min. ssec. Tyril was not extended to win the 220 yards, in the final of which he had to skirt the field. It was expected that the race would provide a good contest between Tyrie and R. A. Rodgers, the South Canterbury sprinter, but the Timaru man after getting away better was blocked when he tried to obtain an inside berth and the check put him out of the finish. Tyrie went right round the field and won well in 23 4-ssec. Rodgers, off 3 yards, was unbeatable in the 100 yards, running a good race to win by a comfortable margin from the Dunedin runners, L. Madigan and H. Lindley, in 10 l-ssec., remarkable time on a heavy track. Tyrie ran a great race in the 440 yards handicap, in which he gave away 40 yards, what seemed an impossible gap to close on a heavy track. The Games runner did not seem to have a chance with a furlong gone, but his long stride ate up the ground when he increased the pace, and running round the outside of the field at the straight entrance, he finished only a foot behind the winner, J. (35 yards). The time was 52 2-ssec.

The outstanding competitor in the women’s section was Miss K. Callinan (Christchurch), New Zealand sprint champion, who was at the top of her form. Miss Callinan was late in striking form this season, but in the last month has put up consistently good times. On a track that was oozing mud on Saturday she won the 75 yards convincingly in the exceptionally fast time of 8 4-ssec.. after conceding up to 7 yards to the field. In the 100 yards she put up another excellent performance to win by a yard from Miss S. Oliphant in 11 3-ssec., which is about as good as she has done this year. Results were: Men’s Events 220 yards—First heat: H. Lindley (15yds) 1, C. Knight (9yds) 2, C. McGregor (2yds) 3. Time, 23 4-ssec. Second heat: J. Fox (18yds) 1, H. J. Tyrie (syds) 2, L. R. H. Bin. “ANGEL’S HOLIDAY” Trouble comes double when little Miss Dynamite comes to town and laughs come thick and fast when her latest escapades as an amateur detective make front-page news in ‘‘Angel’s Holiday,” Twentieth Century-Fox comedy starring Miss Jane Withers. T.N.T., which will be seen at the Elite Theatre to-day. With a gleam in her eye “Ginger” Jane takes a day off, teaching the neighbours how to put the “holler” in “holiday” and routing a riot squad with its own tear gas in a grand free-for-Jane hilarity spree which, despite its torrent of mischief, works out well for the young lovers involved, Robert Kent and Sally Blane, who are featured with Joan Davis in Jane’s supporting cast. Confessedly in stitches all the time, Director James Tinling and Associate Producer Tohn Stone themselves took a holiday from button-bursting laughter at the completion of the film, acclaimed as the funniest of the Withers pictures.
