NEWS AND NOTES
The New Zealand Churches of Christ annual conference opened at Nelson with large delegations, attending from all parts of the Dominion. It was decided that Wanganui should be the venue of the next conference. Mr W. T. Wilson (Dunedin), was elected president. “There is no doubt at all that the name should be spelt with an ‘h,’ ” said Mr L. J. B. Chapple at a meeting of the Whanganui Historical Society. "How we can bring it about remains to be seen. It has been suggested that a monster petition should be inaugurated. while others consider that if the h’ were added in general use and adopted by the press, the change could be brought about.” An Act of Parliament had been necessary to change the name of Petre to Wanganui and to replace the missing “h” further legislation would be required. Greater power for school committees was urged by the Hon. A Burns, M.L.C., at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board recently, when members were expressing views which they desired the chairman, Mr T. U. Wells, to put forward when he addressed the Education Committee now st* Ling in Wellington to discuss the Education Amendment Bill. “An attempt should be made to get greater power fci school committees, which are the direct representatives of the parents,” said Mr Burns. “They should have a greater voice in the management of their grounds and should have more funds to control.” Asked by the chairman to give specific instances where greater authority could be given, Mr Burns said that boards should be allowed to say whether male or female teachers should be appointed, and reiterated that the committees should be given more funds to control.
