WAIMATE GALA HELD

Caledonian Society ENJOYABLE OUTING 11l luck pursues the Waimate Caledonian Society which, having to abandon its sports last Boxing Day on account of heavy rain, decided to stage a gala day at Victoria Park on Saturday. Although the morning broke fine, rain threatened and the weather was cold, and this had a very adverse effect both on the attendance of the public and upon the competitors. During the day fancy dress events for children were held, and both the Waimate Fire Brigade and the Pipe Band gave displays, which proved very interesting to those present. At 12 o'clock the parade of children headed by the Waimate Highland Pipe Band, who made their first public appearance in their new uniforms, left the Post Office and marched to Victoria Park via Queen Street. Later in the day the attendance increased to good proportions. The programme opened with the sports events for children, and some very good contests were witnessed. The fancy dress competitions, although they did not attract a great number of enrties, proved very interesting, among the representations being a black cat, Scotch lass, bridegroom, Chinaman. Spanish dancer and decorated tricycles and bicycles. The fancy dress costumes were judged by Mrs R. F. Algie. The officials in charge of the programme were Messrs A. R. Cooper (president), A. J. Hoskins (secretary), L. C. McLauchlan (announcer), W. A. Dunstan, J. Reid. A. Palmer, J. Brohan, J. Borthwick and L. McPherson. THEFT FROM SHOP The premises of Mr J. C. Winning, fationer, Queen Street, were burg-

lariously entered sometime between Thursday night and Saturday morning, entry apparently being effected by a window in the rear of the biulding. It is understood that some money, amounting to about £5. was taken by the intruders, but it is not yet known whether the stock was interfered with. HUNTER YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB The fourth annual meeting of the Hunter Young Farmers' Club was held in the Hunter Hall, when Mr A. Robinson presided over an attendance of twelve members. The election of officers resulted as follows: President. Mr A. Robinson; chairman, Mr E. R. McConnell; hon. secretary, Mr E. Rathgen; hon. treasurer. Mr F. Scott; auditor, Mr W. Allan; committee, Messrs I. McNeill, D. Gregan, A. McFarlane, L. Forrest, G. Gerrie, J. Geaney. Reference was made by the president to the excellent work of the retiring chairman and secretary'. Mr J. D. Gregan and Mr E. R. KftcConnell. and he congratulated the various club members on their meritorious wins in the inter-club competitions during 1937. GOLF CLUB Messrs L. H. Cairns, L. V. Brenton, J. E. Coventry. D. H. Ashley and B. H. Low were elected as new members at a meeting of the committee of the Waimate Golf Club. Arrangements were completed by which R. K. Fowler, of Oamaru, was engaged as coach. The programme and competition rules for the year were completed and improvements at the links were agreed to. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs E. B. Wright, Coronation Street, have left for a holiday in Christchurch and North Canterbury. Miss Mary Cox, Willowbridge, has left to spend a holiday in Christchurch.
