FINANCES SOUND NEW COMMITTEE ELECTED At the annual meeting of the St. Andrews public library Mr S. Smith presided over a good attendance of subscribers. The annual report and balancesheet and showed a credit balance I £1 9s lid compared with £4 16 the previous year. The report showed during the year the library had been well patronised. The committee had purchased 252 books and another 119 were to be added to the shelves during the next few days. Special thanks were due to the librarians Mrs P. F. Dix and xdrs C. J. E. Smith, the ladies who provided supper and subscribers who gave prizes towards the flag bridge evenings, to the secretary Mr King, committee and co-w 7 orkers for their active interest. The secretary was asked to write to Miss Slattery expressing the committee’s thanks and wishing her success in her new sphere. The election of officers resulted as follows: President. Mr R. S. Smith; Vice-president, Mr H. Bannerman; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr G. J. King; Auditor, Mr J. R. Trimble; Librarians, Mesdames P. F. Dix and C. J. E. Smith; Committee, Mesdames E. J. Dash. H. Bannerman, P. Dix, C. J. E. Smith, J. Barber and Mr A. Leckie. The librarians were each voted £1 for their services during the year. A motion of thanks was passed to Mrs Leckie for giving a cushion to augment funds. It was decided to purchase books from the Dunedin Athenaeum and conduct bridge evenings monthly. LABOUR PARTY ST. ANDREWS BRANCH * At the annual meeting of the St. Andrews Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, Mr G. J. King presided. The election of officers resulted: Chairman, Mr G. J. King; Vice-chair-man, Mr P. F. Dix; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr A. G. Morrison; Committee, Messrs J. Kane, L. Fenwick, C. J. Smith, F. Scarr, J. Scannell; Auditor, E. J. Dash; Delegates to labour representative committee, Messrs lung, Morrison and P. Dix; Delegate to conference, Mr D. Barnes. In introducing Mr D. Barnes member for the district, the chairman outline'’ the activities of the branch during the year. He congratulated Mr Barnes on his work in Parliament and on his appointment to the special committee to consider the superannuation and health schemes The chairman deplored the rowdysim at recent political meetings which was not countenanced by the Labour Party. Referring to the Hon. Adam Hamilton's remarks regarding freedom of speech, Mr King made reference to an Act passed by the Coalition Government in 1935 making any public servant liable to dismissal for criticising he Government in any way. Mr Barnes thanked members for their co-operation throughout the year and expressed his confidence in being returned at the forthcoming election. The Labour Party stood for freedom for all, not for a few. He gave a very interesting address on the proposed superanuation and health schemes and land settlement. During his recent tour of the North Island Mr Barnes said he had gone into the questions of land settlement and it was surprising how few holidays could be economically cut up. At the conslusion of the address Mr Barnes answered various questions. Votes of thanks were extended to the ladies who dispensed supper and to Mr Barnes for his address.

The chairman congratulated Mr Barnes on his able speech in reply to Hon. Adam Hamilton.

RAINFALL During March 1.60 inches of rain vas recorded by Mr D. G. Lyall. Rain fell on 9 days as follows: 2nd—32 points. 3rd —f? 3 points, 4th —2 points, 16th—36 points, 18th—3 points, 19th—--10 points, 21st—2 points, 22nd—25 points, 28—7 points The total for the month compares with 1.73 inches during the same period last year. The total for the three months this year is 6.54 inches, compared with 8.76 inches for the first quarter of 1937.
