RIFLE SHOOTING

CHAMPIONSHIP won by f. r. cross

The Timaru Defence Rifle Club fired the final of the championship on Saturday afternoon. The conditions which were 15 shots at 600 yards proved a severe test. Weather conditions were bad, visibility being the worst experienced on the range this season. The position of the three leaders at the start of the shoot was Cross and Black 754. Paine 750. The trio went down together in the third squad, firing under a time limit. Both Cross and Paine commenced well and with 10 shots gone Cross had a lead of a point on Paine. Black did not get going and he dropped six points behind. Cross further increased his lead with the last five shots, his total of 70 being four better than Paine’s, and eight better than Black's. Cross deserved his win and the new champion was heartily congratulated. W. T. Taylor, shooting in an earlier squad, also put on 70, which gave him a lead of four points on Jones and level with Black and Paine, all with 816 points. A shoot-off was necessary to decide second, third and fourth places, and a further five shots with a compulsory sighter was fired. The shoot off proved very exciting. Black finished first with 24, followed by Taylor with 23. Paine was shooting slower and finding the bull with each shot, finishing with a possible—a brilliant shoot, which gave him second place in the championship with Black third and Taylor fourth. The tie for t.he gold rifle trophy between Paine and Johnson will be shot off next Saturday. The weekly trophy was won by J. M. Smith from E. M. Healy counting out M. Healy, H. Hopkins and F. Ruddenklau. The scores were:—
