WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ARNO Mrs Fitzsimmons presided at the monthly meeting of the Arno Women s Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed Mrs Beard in her recent bereavement. Miss D. Thomas was elected president and Miss O. Morrison secretary Miss J. Thomas, treasurer and Miss T Farrell vice-president. Mrs Fitzsimmons was appointed agent for the Home and Country journal. Misses D and J. Thomas were elected as delegates to Geraldine and it was decided tc send a delegate to Wellington. A competition was won by Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Dench. The flower competition resulted. - Senior: Mrs Fitzsimmons 1. Mrs Meredith 2, Miss Gorman 3 Junior: Miss D. Thomas 1. Miss T. Farrell 2 SEADOWN The Seadown Women's Institute held its seventh birthday party in the school. The president, Mrs W. McCully presided and extended a welcome to all including nearly 40 visitors from eight neighbouring institutes. A delightful programme arranged by the junior members was much enjoyed and was as follows.—Pianoforte duet, Misses J. Topham and S. Hide; song. Mrs M Shepherd; violin solo. Miss N. Fitzgerald; banjo solo. Miss D. Bresnahan; Highland dance, Miss J. Hedley; duet, Misses M. Shepherd and S. Hide; banjo solo. Miss V. McCully: sword dance. Miss J. Hedley. Competitions were won by Mesdames Brown (Washdyke). Evans Temuka). and Misses G. Lyons and N. Parker (Waitohi). Afternoon tea was served by the committee, the birthday cake was made by Mrs J. Pemberton, iced and beautifully decorated by Miss D. Brosnahan and surmounted by red and gold candles which were lit by Mrs Gudsell (Winchester). Mrs Talbot (Rangatira v alley) and Miss Oir.elvena (Hilton), while Miss Joan Pemberton blew them out. The president cut the cake which was handed round by the hostesses. Bouquets made by Mrs Topham were presented to Mrs W. McCully (president). Mrs L. Ward (secretary) and Mrs H. Brosnahan (treasurer) as a mark of esteem for their work during the year. Mrs W. The eighth annual meeting of the : Fairlie Women’s Institute was held in . the Parish Hall, Mrs West presided 1 over a fair attendance of members. 1 A motion of sympathy was passed to 1 Miss Foden, Mrs Braddick and Mrs C. 1 Reynolds in their recent bereavements. 1 Mrs Edwards, Dunedin, and Mrs < Scott, Invercargill, were welcomed as , visitors. Three new members.—Mesdames T. i C. Scott, W. Mackintosh and Riddley ; —were elected. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to Mrs Harper on her appointment as matron of the Strathcona Domestic School. Mrs A. H. Gillingham reported on the progress of the school and asked for co-operation. Delegates to attend the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Federation at Geraldine are Mrs E. Robertson and Mrs D. Jeune. Mrs West was elected delegate at the annual conference. The “golden thread” talk was given by Mrs S. Braddick, her subject-being the life of a lonely woman on the Isle of Rone. The president read the annua) report commenting on the year as an active and happy one. The treasurer, Mrs J. Fraser, presented a very creditable balance-sheet. Both reports were adopted and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr G. Lyons for auditing the books. On behalf of the committee. Mrs 3. Braddick presented Mrs West with a crystal vase and Mrs Besley handed her a beautiful bouquet of roses and carnations. In reply, Mrs West thanked her committee for their gifts and also for the loyal support she had received. As a token of esteem she presented each with a posy of flowers. Mrs West was re-elected president. The prize given by Mrs Barnes for the member contributing the most to social and educational activities for the year was won by Mrs A. H. Gillingham. During the afternoon Miss N. Talbot delighted the members with several songs, with Miss P. Talbot as accompanist. A vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation, each being the recipient of a posy of flowers. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the following hostesses, Mesdames A. H. Gillingham, G. Macdonald, Crichton, Monahan, Riddle. Searle. Whittleston and Jeune. The monthly competitions resulted as follows. —Coffe cake, A class: Mrs Fahey 1, Mrs Braddick 2. FAIRVIEW At the annual meeting of the Fairview Women’s Institute there was a good attendance of members. Two new members were proposed, Mrs J. Howden and Miss M. Heath. Mrs Campbell was elected agent for the “Home and Country” journal. The president in her report, thanked all the members for their support during her term of office, also all those who had given demonstrations She also read the secretary’s report, and thanked Miss M. Smith who had filled the position since the November

meeting. The treasurer. Miss M. Kelland, presented a most satisfactory balance sheet. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr F. Shewan, who had I audited the books. Before the retiring president, secretary and treasurer had vacated their chairs, Derry Shewan presented each with a bouquet. The election of officers resulted as follows.—President, Mrs Kelland; committee, Mesdames T. Butchers, D. Stewart. F. Smith, R. Shaw, Vincent. F. Shewan, W. Butchers, T. Campbell. Kerr, Misses H. Mercer. R. Butchers. M. Kelland. A vote of thanks was accorded i o Mrs Finlay. Mrs D. Stewart was elected to represent the Institute at the conference to be held in Wellington. During the afternoon items were given by Misses M. Kelland, R. Butchers, M. Heath. Hostesses were Mesdames Raddon, Stewart, Kerr, Shewan.
