TIMARU TROTTING CLUB

CLASSIC “PROGRAMME TO-DAY The most ambitious programme yet framed by the Timaru Trotting Club will be presented to its patrons at Washdyke to-day. In addition to the two classics—the New Zealand Trotting Stakes of £450, and the Timaru Nursery Stakes of £3so—the Timaru Cup of £5OO provides a handsome stake for pacers assessed at 4.30 or faster- To make room for the classics, the usual maiden races have been eliminated, and there will be no unwieldy fields and consequent overcrowding. Trains will leave Timaru for the racecourse at 11.7, 11.33, 12.8 and 12.40. Betting will be transacted on the single pool system, with two dividends (75-25) when the totalisator numbers are five or more. The Temuka Handicap (3.39), timed to commence at 12.30, has attracted a dozen acceptors. Mont d’Or’s win at Motukarara has sent his back to 60 behind, and he will require to be an exceptional improver to win from that mark. Tire popular selections are likely to be Francisco, Wharrum and Waikari Jack. Only five three-year-old trotters will be on hand to race for the nice prize of £450 in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, and as none of them has started in a race at a totalisator meeting backers will have to rely on private reputations. Gold Weed is reported to have shown promise before he left Tapanui to be trained at Forbury, but probably the favourites will be Reta’s Own (R. Townley) and Gold Weed (M. Clare). Eddie Tolan has the ability to win the Seadown Handicap, but the black horse is so erratic at the start that he cannot be recommended. Better prospects are Norham Lady, Laurene Wood and the Lazybones-Ace High couplet. The Timaru Cup will be contested by ten smart performers, including the trotting queen Sea Gift. Form points to Renown’s Best and Morello, but the Blair Athol-Llewellyn’s Pride combination and Gallant Knight will have plenty of adherents. The race should be a fine one with Renown's Best, Morello and Blair Athol possible placegetters. The field of trotters in the Kingsdown Handicap is the best that has been attracted by an unhoppled event at Washdyke for many years, and the race promises to be much more interesting than has been the case on many recent occasions. Peggotty is almost certain to be the popular candidate, but R. Townley has a strong bracket in Parrish Guide and Lady Sonoma, and probably Peggotty and Parrish Guide will lead the field home. The only acceptor for the Timaru Nursery Stakes with any race experience is Taiki, but he failed to go away when elected favourite at Auckland, and like the others he has to be assessed on his private form. Taiki will be coupled with another promising Grattan Loyal youngster in Special Edition, and the combmation will carry big money. Grattan Loyal has a third representative in Coquette, trained by F. G. Holmes, but Jack Potts, whose name figured most prominently in the original entries, has to rely on two, Rowi and Zingarie (the last-named a brother to Zincali). Aidershot (WrackTrix Pointer), a brother to Wrackler and other good ones, will carry the confidence of Durbar Lodge, and is reputed to be above the average. The Berry stable will produce the Welling-ton-owned Centaurus, and J. Bryce has a good one in Shadowson, by the wellknown performer Red Shadow. The remaining candidate is the Travis Axworthy filly Waiora, about which little is known. . Speculators may fancy Aidershot, Taiki and Zingarie. The Wai-iti Handicap (2.56) looks to be one of the most open on the card, and probably a good many horses will be in demand. The judge’s placings may include Lightning Lady, Laurene Wood and Gold Salute. A small but select field is programmed for the Washdyke Handicap, the fast sprint race. Morello (provided he has not incurred a penalty) is likely to dispute favouritism with Parisienne. but Rongomai is another sure to be in big demand. The card is as follows: 12.30 p.m. TEMUKA HANDICAP, Of £l2O (3.39); 11 miles Four Square scr Lady Slipper 12 Lord Zetland scr Maltravers 12 Nelson Wharrum 12 McFarlane scr Fine Art 36 Waikari Jack scr Rollalong 36 Francisco 12 Mont d’Or 60 Karoro 12 1.10 p.m. NZ.
