WOMEN ABROAD
POSITION IN FUTURE I An address, entitled “The Position | of Women in Turkey and Germany Today.” was given by Miss Jessie Webb, of Victoria, to Australian university women recently. Miss Webb said that the future of the women in both countries looked bright. University, trained women were in demand everywhere. "Freedom is a thing we have to fight for every day, for each gain in freedom means a renewed struggle for something else,” she said. Some interesting points from the report of Mrs M. J. Maloney (Melbourne) on the survey of University women in Australia, were:— A general estimation of the total number of women graduates in Australia in 1936 was 6171. Women have graduated in all faculties except engineering. The deviation from specific degree work are few. The following cases have been noted: A graduate in law is managing director of three breweries in West Australia; a doctor of science conducts a travel agency in Sydney; a graduate in medicine founded a college of domestic science; graduates in arts are. respectively, supervisor of the homes service department of a Sydney gas light company, owner of a garage staffed by women, organiser for Australia of the English League of Health and Beauty, inspector of women’s work in the Queensland Department of Public Instruction, teacher of dancing in Sydney. In England and in America, university women graduates find employment commensurate with their qualifications much more easily than do graduates in Australia, and they receive more equitable salaries for their work. In Australia, the disabilities placed in the way of trained women seeking employment are great. There is no equality of opportunity with men. Sex. not qualifications, determines fitness. It is more difficult for women architests and scientific workers to get positions than it is for men, and the women are usually paid less when they are employed Few married women in Australia continue their work after marriage.
