SIGNIFICANCE OF IPSWICH BY-ELECTION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received February 18, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 17. The Ipswich by-election is the biggest Government defeat since the general elections. Mr Stokes, the successful Labour candidate, is chairman of the engineering firm of Ransomes and Rapier, whose offer to make shells on a nonprofit basis was turned down by the Government last year. Mr Stokes attributes his win to dissatisfaction over the Government’s foreign policy. Mr Willink says Mr Stokes succeeded because he is a large scale employer.
The Ipswich by-election caused by Sir John Ganzoni’s elevation to the peerage resulted: R. Stokes (Labour) 27,604, H. Willink (National Conservative) 24,443. This is a Labour gr.in. Tlie result at the 1935 election was: Sir John Ganzoni (Conservative), 28,528; R. F. Jackson (Labour), 21,278; majority for Ganzoni, 7250.
