From the King’s Stud
In addition to the Supreme champion pen of Southdown ewes at the English Royal Show, Messrs Ellis Bros., of New Zealand, have also purchased in England seven outstanding stud ewes from the Sandringham flock of His Majesty the King. All the ewes were mated to leading English Sires before being sent into quarantine and have been shipped to Australia en route to New Zealand. Fruit Export Trade The annual report of British firms engaged in the wholesale fruit trade records that at times during the season just ended some unsteadiness was observable in the market demand but, on the whole, prices were quite satisfactory for New Zealand and Australian apples. The demand for pears was not always up to expectation. The quality of the fruit from the different sources was regarded as variable. Some of the New Zealand varieties occupying an important place in their ratio to the total volume of shipments—Stunners, Delicious and Dunns—were not up to the former qualitative standard of apples of the same varieties from that source. Compared with the 1936 season, the shipments of apples from New Zealand to the United Kingdom showed a reduction of approximately 240,000 cases.
