SCOUTS AND GUIDES
FOUNDER’S-DAY SERVICE TO-MORROW 4» The training of boys and girls in any useful sphere, is a work of decided importance to the community. Hence it is that the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides’ Associations, which have for their common objective the making of better citizens, have' become important adjuncts in the cultural development of the country. In Timaru both these movements have been well patronised, and the large following is a tribute to the good sense of Timaru parents, who see in these activities a means of building the character of their children. Both Associations were founded by Lord Baden-Powell in 1908, for the stated purpose of promoting good citizenship in the rising generation. The success of the organisations is amply demonstrated by the fact, that not only have they found world-wide favour, but are regarded as one of the greatest forces for peace in the world to be. Recognising no bar of race or colour, the cosmopolitan nature of the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides makes them a vehicle for promoting good fellowship among nations. The valuable crafts taught and the general rule of conduct expected of members is a tribute to the inspiration of the founder who celebrates his birthday at this time. Not only does gratitude and appreciation demand that the Founder’s Day Service which is to be held in the Bay Hall, to-morrow afternoon should be attended by all Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, but also that parents, who are indebted in a special way to Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, will be present. The service will bs addressed by Archdeacon Monaghan.
