RACING AND TROTTING

On and Off the Track . BUDGET OF NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES: Racing Feb. 19—Winton J.C. Feb. 19, 22—Tolaga Bay J.C. Feb. 19, 21—Waikato R.C Feb. 19, 21—Woodville District J.C. Feb. 24, 26—Wanganui J.C. Feb. 25, 26—Westland R.C. Feb. 25, 26—Gore R.O. Feb. 26—Waiapu R.C. Feb. 26, 28—Te Aroha J.C. Trotting Feb. 19—New Brighton T.C. Feb. 26—Kalkoura T.C. Feb. 26—Wairarapa T.C. Mar. s—lnvercargill T.C. Mar. s—Wellington T.C. New Brighton trots to-day. There will be racing to-day at Winton, Te Rapa, Woodville, and Tolaga Bay. • • • • Twelve months ago Southland was practically under water, but this year the country is dry and the tracks hard, and a good many sore horses are in evidence. The dry weather has brought the harvest in early, and this affected the attendance at Winton yesterday. • • • • W. 8. Ellis, the small Invercargill apprentice, scored his first win when he brought his father’s mare Mona’s Song home a winner in the Novice Stakes at Winton. The youngster went one better by winning the Cup on Amelita. A sound skull cap probably saved W. Cooper from serious injury at Winton yesterday. When Scotsden fell his bridle came off and the rider landed on his head. The cap was crushed, but the jockey escaped with some damage to one of his hands. R. E. McLellan’s stable has had a great run of success this season, but it is now experiencing some ill luck. Trebleack has had to be spelled till next season and Milford is under treatment for lameness whose source has not been located.

The Gore trained four-year-old Happy Locanda was installed a twoway favourite for the Otapiri Trot at Winton and got home after a stern chase of Foremost and Glenelad and Katene. Happy Locanda has started only three times for two wins and a second, and looks likely to improve his record. There was some fiddling at the start of the Flying Handicap at Winton, and when the barrier rose Janet Gaynor lost several lengths and Viking was checked. At the end of two furlongs Rodeur had run to the lead from Viking and Roy Bun, and she battled on to win by a neck from Roy Bun, who beat Viking by more than two lengths. Rodeur, who was the outsider of the field, had not previously won in open company. Only thre horses finished in the Winton Steeplechase. Scotsden crashed at the first jump (a hurdle), Vitaphone at the sod wall the second time round, and Jollyanna and Glenmure at the back of the course. Jollanna led for a mile and a quarter when Trisox and Hunting Go went ahead. They raced in company until the home tum, where Trisox forged clear to win by four lengths with Royal Pal, the only other horse upstanding, cantering round for third money.

After driving Happy Locanda to victory in the first trot at Winton, J. Walsh produced a winner from his own stable in the tighter class later in the afternoon. Gold Streak led all the way, and although he had to be driven to stall off Bonny Brydone and Jesse Owens, he won by nearly two lengths, Bonny Brydone narrowly defeating Jesse Owens for second. Gold Streak is one of the Sungod breed which is usually seen to best advantage on soft tracks.

Paladino was elected a strong favourite for the Winton Cup, and when he appeared to get his head in front of Amelita at the top of the straight the big gelding was acclaimed a winner, but the little mare fought him off, and ran home a length to the good, scoring her third win in succession. Trivet, who finished third, was disappointed in seeking an opening on the rails at the home turn. Ashaway, who won the race a year ago, was the last to finish. Amelita is believed to be in foal to Nigger Minstrel and this may be her last season on the race tracks.

Coat of Arms, who held up a start at Tapanul for 20 minutes, threatened to give trouble in the Barkly Handicap at Winton, but he soon consented to be led in and the field all got away smartly except Roseman and Aspire. Ballad, Final Bell, Peony Rose and Sailing Lady led along the back, and turning for home Peony Rose, Ballad and Sailing Lady looked to be in line. Peony Rose came on to win by half a length from Aspire, who finished fast and defeated Coat of Arms by threequarters of a length for second, with Ballad close up fourth.

After a long run of outs Grand Finale came back to win the Tradesmen’s handicap at Winton, from the consistent All Humbug. The favourite, Daring Deed, was caught unready at the barrier and lost a good deal of ground. Poniard and Song Boy led out of the straight from Grand Finale, but going along the back Song Boy, AU Humbug and Daring Deed were disputing the lead. All Humbug led

Song Boy to the straight, where Grand Finale unwound a strong run and got up to beat All Humbug by threequarters of a length, with Poniard a neck away and Song Boy close up.

The Colonel Cygnus filly Astral Flash was the win favourite for the Novice Stakes at Winton but only fifth choice on the place machine. Contrariwise, Mona’s Song was 5-1 in the betting, backers apparently concluding that although she would have been topweight in a handicap F. W. Ellis’s filly was not lucky enough to win. Astral Flash, Cone Peak, Bad News and Silkwood were the early leaders, but Mona's Song moved into second place two furlongs from home and in a bunched finish she won by a neck from SUkwood, who beat Cone Peak by half a length. Foxglove, Astral Flash and Bad News were right up with the placegetters. Foxglove, Delboa and Wyn got away badly, and Kippen lost his rider after going two furlongs. The following horses may be in demand at the Waikato meeting today:— Trial Stakes—lnquisitor, Balinavar, Ivy Willonyx.
