ALBURY .RIDING COUNCIL MAKES TOUR With the object of inspecting roads and bridges, members of the Mackenzie County Council yesterday made a tour of the Albury riding. Those in the party included: Messrs W. R. Davison (chairman), A. F. Campbell, P. Kidd, George Murray, J. Allan, A. B. Mackenzie, A. E. Lawrence (Editor of “The Timaru Herald’’) and D. Jeune (County Engineer). At several points, groups of ratepayers were met who put forward requests for improvements. The party assembled at, the Monavale road at 9.30 a.in., and on the way over the Cave hill viewed the proposed location for a tunnel. At Marton’s crossing, one ratepayer drew the attention of the Council to the dangerous corner, and it was considered that a remedy would require the co-opera-tion of the Levels County Council. The route followed the Cannington Gorge, which was left by the cutting widened by unemployed men in 1929. At Monavale, reached by the back road, there were two deputations, one seeking the diversion of a stream. and improvements to Stevens’ road, while the principal reqest advanced by the ether group was the improvement of the bridge leading to the Monavale School. Morning tea was provided by the chairman and Mrs Davison. The rest of the morning was spent in the Mount Nessing district, which was reached via Rocky Gully and Askin's roads. The site for a bridge over the Rocky Gully stream on Askin’s road was inspected. The itinerary included a trip to the end of the Mount Nessing road, and on the high portions the improvements effected by the removal of corners were noted. After lunch at the Albury hotel, the tour took in Chamberlain, and a deputation was received for a bridge over a stream at Fraser's. The request received favourable consideration, it being considered that timber from bridges shortly to be dismantled, could be used. The Coal-pit and Limestone Valley roads were travelled, and at Albury Park, where afternoon tea was served, the inspection of excellent specimens of Redwood trees provided an interesting feature of the tour. The need for a new bridge over the Tengawai river some miles below the proposed downland supply intake was voted. The day’s Jpur of inspection concluded with the trip down the Cricklewood road and back to the starting point.
