CONSTABLE WOUNDED

SHOT FIRED FROM TAXI Hearing a taxi-cap driver appealing for help at midnight as a result of a dispute between his two fares at Lancaster Gate, a police constable, Matthew Bursnall, ran up, intervened, and immediately a shot was fired from the taxi, entering Bursnall’s stomach. Bursnall fell after having truncheoned one occupant. The other jumped out of the cab and escaped, in spite of pursuit by police and bystanders. Bursnall is progressing. Another man was also taken to hospital.
