ATHLETICS

WOMEN’S HURDLES RECORD By Telegraph—Press Association DANNEVIRKE, January 8. Competing in the 90 yards women’s hurdles at the Dannevirke Amateur Athletic Club’s annual meeting, Miss R. Tong, Hastings, holder of the NewZealand record for the event, succeeded in lowering the existing figures of 15 seconds by 2-5 of a second. In the final Miss Tong, one of the Dominion representatives for the Empire Games, ran the distance in 12 3-5 seconds, finishing very strongly and winning by several yards. The conditions were perfect, there being an absence of wind when the race was run. Application is to be made for recognition of the time as a New Zealand record.
