GAMING DEN RAIDED
SEVENTEEN MEN ARRESTED By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, January 7. Raiding premises in the city, detectives arrested 17 men, who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court later charged with offences under the Gaming Act. One was charged with being the occupier of the premises and using them as a common gaming house, and the others were charged with being found on the premises. Bert Facoory was charged with being the occupier of the premises.
Detective-Sergeant McHugh said the place had been conducted on a large scale for a month. When the detectives raided it they found that the men had been playing two-up and there were dice in a cup on the table. The premises were fitted up solely for gambling. Facoory was fined £25 and costs, in default three months’ imprisonment. Three men who had previous convictions were fined £2 each, and the others £1 each. “I don’t know whether these gentlemen are going to pay their fines or go in for the night,” remarked the Magistrate. He fixed the default at seven days’ imprisonment and allowed until Monday for the payment of the fines.
