FOURTH IN THE LAND

THE DUKE CF WINDSOR LONDON, December 18. The man who was first in the land, the Duke of Windsor, is now fourth, ranking in social precedence as the King’s youngest brother. The Duchess of Windsor, who would normally have been th'' eighth woman in the land as wife- 1 of the King’s “youngest” brother, is actually ranked as the last of the 29 duchesses.

The greatest reshuffle in the order of social precedence this century was caused by Edward VIII’s abdication. Hundreds of peers, baronets and knights have slid up or down the social scale. All these changes are summed up in the 1938 (Coronation Honours) Edition of Burke’s Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage. This is the first completely revised edition to be published since the death of King George V., and the table of relative rank and precedence has had to be drastically changed.
