SWEDEN IS TOP
ATHLETICS IN EUROPE Sweden is again the best athletic nation in Europe, defeating Germany and Hungary in 1937. The Olympic Games in Berlin were last year's climax to athletic events ’ abroad. One would have expected a lull on the Continent in 1937. with the thought that various countries would i wish to begin preparations for the next | Olympic Games in Tokio. But events I
this season were worthy successors to the Games last year. America was again top nation in athletics. The United States sent strong teams to Europe and Japan, which proved superior, although some remarkable defeats were unavoidable. Sweden won the annual match against Germany by 107 points to 101, and, three weeks later, a similar match against Hungary. As usually happens after a last match, some German journalists tried hard to prove that Germany was the strongest athletic nation in Europe, but the actual results showed the futility of that argument. All the Olympic track and field events were in the programme, and for the third time Sweden was victorious, winning 10 of 20 events. The aggregate of places gave Sweden the decisive points.
