BILLIARDS

LINDRUM-McCONACHY FOR TITLE Walter Lindrum has agreed to defend his world's billiard championship for £lOO aside against Clark McConachy, of New Zealand, starting on February 7, the venue to be decided later. Lindrum expects McConachy to reach Sydney by January .15 to make final arrangements. He also insists that the stake money be lodged with The Globe, t tile he will expect McConachy and his manager to do a halfshare of the work connected with the promotion of the match. While quite agreeable to play in Feb-n-ary. Lindrum believes that that month is not a good period to stage a world's title match. He thinks it would be a good idea for McConachy to wait until April, w b en Joe Davis and Horace Lindrum will be in Australia. They could then. Lindrum says, stage a world’s title series with at least four contestants, and after that have a s-ries of international matches in which Australia, New Zealand, and

England would be represented. This would all come in the best weeks of our billiard season, and could hardly fail to create public interest. There has been no news of McConachy’s billiards for several months. I However, he must be at his top, otherwise he would not risk £lOO against Lindrum. Lindrum is in constant practice and playing at his top. Throughout the year he has been playing exhibition matches throughout Australia and Tasmania, and has rarely failed to break 500 in any. Thousand breaks have been regular, the latest being 1245 at Clunes last

week. Other big breaks last week were i 670 and 400 (unf.) against Sid. Evans, i whose father once held the Australian I championship; 798 at Horsham, and | r <•& at Dirr boola. ’ Lindrum is pleased with the imI proved showing of some of his country I opponents, and is working on a plan I for a match between country and city amateurs. Lindrum says that city amateurs would be surprised at the high stanI dard of country players. He also says i that playing conditions have improved | considerably during the last few years.
