CURIOUS MARRIAGE CUSTOMS
The following are some of the curious customs which prevail in different parts of the world in regard to matrimony. Kaffirs sacrifice oxen when a marriage is celebrated. The Tartars of Turkestan give the weight of the prospective wife in butter or dates. In Uganda it is the custom to offer six needles and a quantity of indiarubber I for a bride. In Kamskatcha the price varies from one reindeer to as much as fifteen of these useful animals, ac-
cording to the attractiveness of the chosen one, who is required to work very hard among the reindeer herds and to obey loyally every command of her husband. RENEWING A TRANSFER Transfers for embroidering will stamp off more clearly, and can be used twice, if only medium heat is applied instead of a very hot iron. If desired, a transfer design can be renewed by tracing over the lines with a new pen-nib dipped in a paste of equal portions of blue, sugar and cold water. When perfectly dry, the transfer is ready for ironing off again.
