PRINCESS ELIZABETH'S NEW HOBBY

While Princess Elizabeth was staying in Scotland with her parents this autumn she was frequently seen hunting about among the rocks near Balmoral. She was looking for precious stones and pebbles which she had been told might be found there to add to a collection she is making. There are many valuable stones m Scotland which, when mounted, make lovely pieces of jewellery, and these interested the Princess very much. If other people can find them so can I, she thought, and kept her eyes open

wherever she went for agates and o.ncr gems. As soon as the Queen saw how keen the Princess was on her new hobby, ehsummoned a member of the Antiquarian Society of Scotland to the Castle to tell about the type of rocks in which the stones are to be found and the best districts to look for them. He found the Queen and the Princess ready listeners, and before he left he gave the Princess several specimens from his own valuable collection and presented the Queen with a beautiful pebble brooch set in silver. It is called a "Grannies Brooch.” and is made from one of the old plaid jewels of Scotland. The Queen was delighted with the gift, and immediately pinned it on to the dress she was wearing.
