OTIP A The annual picnic of the Otipaa Women's Institute yas held at the Hall. A large number of members and friends were present and a most enjoyable time was spent. A varied sports programme was arranged the winners of the races being as follows: Girls, under 6 years, Mary Frame 1, Rosalind Allen 2. Under 9 years, Pauline Campbell 1, Agnes Allen 2. Over 9 years, Margaret Hoare 1. Dorothy Caldwell 2, Norma Campbell 3. Boys under 9 years. Ray Styles 1. Harold Hoare 2, Bruce Morrison 3. Boys over 9, Lawrie Hoare 1, Noel Ford
2, Dave Stowell and Jack Gavigan (equal) 3. Boys’ wheelbarrow race, Ray Styles and N. Dalgleith 1, Noel Ford and Jack Gavigan 2. Secondary school girls’ race, Jean Palliser 1, Nancy Dalgleish 2, Ruby Hoare 3. Girls’ book race, Agnes Allen 1, Margaret Hoare 2, Dorothy Caldwell 3. Girls’ three-legged race, Norma Campbell and Agnes Allen 1 Pauline Campbell and Rosalind Allen 2. Boys’ three-legged race, Jack Gilsenan and Ray Styles 1, Bruce Morrison and Harold Hoare 2. Single women’s race, Miss N. O’Donoghue 1. Miss M. Coughlan 2, Miss D. Quigley 3. Single women’s book race, Miss I. Watson 1, Miss M. Coughland 2. Married women’s book race, Mrs Les Purves 1. Mrs Godwin 2. Married women’s book race, Mrs Morrison 1, Mrs S. Davison and Mrs Caldwell (equa!) 2. Nail driving competition: Married women, Mrs N. Jackson; single women, Miss D. Bell; married men, Mr E. Stowell. After afternoon tea had been served, the president (Miss M. Coughlan) welcomed all present and called on Mrs W. Purves to present the prizes. Each child received a small gift.
RANGATIRA VALLEY The December meeting of the Rangatira Valley Women’s Institute was held at the resident of Mrs O’Boyle, Mrs R. Talbot presiding over a large attendance of members. Two new members, Mrs H. O’Neill and Miss B. Stewart, received a hearty welcome. After routine business was concluded Mrs G. A. Davey gave a demonstration of budding and layering. The competitions resulted as follows: Christmas novelty, Mrs Geddes 1, Mrs Hartnett 2. Best bloom, Mrs G. G. Gould (geranium) 1, Mrs G. A. Davey -delphinium) 2. The November meeting took the form of an open air meeting at “Woodlands,” when visitors from neighbouring Institutes were present. A pleasant time was spent in games and competitions, and a short playette was staged, the parts being sustained by Mesdames Talbot and Davey. The winners of the competitions were: Prettiest fancy hat, Mrs Hartnett. Most original fancy hat, Mrs Lloyd. Clock golf. Mrs Topham. Onions, Mrs S. G. McCullough. Prominent people competition, Mrs D. Kennedy. Naming shrubs, Mrs Boyes. During afternoon tea a birthday cake (made and iced by Mrs Kennedy) was cut. The prize for most points for the year’s competitions was presented to Mrs R. Talbot.
