RESISTANCE OATS
EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE IN SOUTHLAND
A feature of interest was the growing of a block of Resistance oats, states a report by Mr A. Stuart, Instructor of Agriculture, Invercargill, on work done at the Winton Experimental and Demonstration Farm. This variety is giving promise of excellent performance in Southland. The crop was spring-grown, and the block was situated in the centre of a field of Gartons Abundance. The Resistance was definitely better headed than the Gartons, although shorter in the straw, and approximately a week maturing. There was ample evidence of its ability to stand up under adverse conditions, as it did not lodge, while the Gartons went down badly in parts. This characteristic is a valuable one for many Southland soil types.
