SHAW SAVILL-ABERDEEN As from January 1, the name of the new shipping service from England to Australia, via the Cape of Good Hope, previously known as the White StarAberdeen service, will be known as the Shaw Savill-Aberdeen service. The service employs a large number of vessels, including the passenger liners Ceramic and Themistocles. Early in 1939, the 27,000-tonner Dominion Monarch will be added to the fleet, inaugurating the new England-South Africa-Australia-New Zealand service. The names which have been bracketed in the new title recall the early days of trade between England. Australia, and New Zealand. Both the Shaw Savill and Aberdeen lines operated many famous sailing ships. The Shaw Savill ships were better known in the New Zealand trade, but the Aberdeen clippers in the Australian trade were known throughout the world.

More than 50 years ago, the sailing ship Dunedin, carrying the Shaw Savill house flag, made history by taking the first cargo of frozen meat from New Zealand to England. She carried 4931 carcases. The latest Shaw Savill cargo liners, Wairangi, Walpawa, and Waiwera can each carry more than 250,000 carcases, in addition to a large cargo of general merchandise. The first Shaw Savill vessel to visit New Zealand was the steamer Coptic, in 1886. The name of this vessel is being carried on by one of the fleet’s modern motor vessels. The present strength of the Shaw Savill fleet is 26 vessels, some steam driven and others motor driven, with an aggregate tonnage of almost 300,000.
