ST. ANDREWS

JUBILEE SPORTS MEETING SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE The St. Andrews Caledonian Society held its jubilee sports meeting at Victoria Park on Monday. The weather was beautifully fine and there was the largest attendance for many years. The president, Mr Robt. W. Munrol and the directors of the Society should have every reason to feel satisfied with the success of the day. The various events were splendidly patronised by competitors, whose performances reached a high standard. The officials and secretaries (Messrs L. A. O’Loughlin and L. Edwards), are to be congratulated on the efficient manner In which the events were run off. The Timaru Highland Pipe Band was present and, in addition to a display, entertained the gathering with selections. The presence of two of the competitors at the initial fixture of the Society in the district, Messrs J. Hampton (Morgan's Road, Timaru) and Richard Hoskins (Oamaru), created a great deal of interest. The two visitors were introduced by the president during the afternoon and were escorted round the grounds and given musical honours by the Pipe Band. Mr Munro wished them many more years of health to enable them to continue the interest in Caledonian meetings which they had taken up to the present. Mr Hampton displayed trophies, a pair of field glasses and a silver mounted claret jug (the latter given by the late Mr D. Stowell), won by him in the mile fiat race, local, during the first and second meetings of the Society. An inscription on the field glasses showed the first meeting was held on December 16, 1888. This meeting was held on the property of the Pareora Land Company, below where the St. Andrews vicarage is now situated. The meeting was attended by 2000 people, starting at 10.30 a.m. and finishing at 6 p.m. Other competitors taking part in the first meetings of the Society were mentioned by the visitors as follows: R. Hoskins, won pole vault (local), hop, step and jump (local), placed second to J. Grant, of Oamaru, in the pole jump; J. Grant, won open high jump; O'Grady, won wrestling events; Constable Crawford, won walking events; G. King, Washdyke) won long distance races; J. Sullivan, won putting the shot and throwing the hammer, with Andrew Martin second; O'Brien, won open mile first year; George Hicks, open mile second year. H. O’Neill won tw’o cycling events in 1907, when the track was first made. He rode with considerable success throughout the Dominion at that time, winning the New Zealand championship in 1907.
