BRITAIN’S ARABIC BROADCASTS
FEARS OF JAMMING IN THE EAST ACTIVITIES OF ITALIAN STATIONS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 3, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 2. “The News-Chronicle” says: “Every possible precaution is being taken by Broadcasting House at Daventry to prevent interruption of Great Britain's first Arabic broadcast on Monday, but it is still feared that it may be jammed abroad. Receiving centres near the East will listen with powerful direction finders to take the bearings of any station wandering on to Da”entry's wave-length. Signor Mussolini’s shortwave stations have recently on several occasions jammed British news. The official explanation that the transmitter was off its wave has been regarded with some doubt and precautions are being taken to prevent any unauthorised (interruption. In the studio the Arabic speaking official will sit at a master control, ready to switch off in the event of interpolation or unrehearsed comments.”
“WAR OF ETHER AGAINST ITALY” IMPRESSION OF BRITAIN'S BROADCAST United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 4, 12.8 am.) ROME, January 3. Arabic speaking stenographers of the Italian Government will listen to Britain's first Arabic broadcast to-day, transcribing the report for Signor Alfieri (Minister of Popular Culture), who controls the vast output of Fascist propaganda. These writers describe the British move as the opening of a “war of ether against Italy.” . BROADCAST IN GERMAN United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 3, 6.30 p.m.) PRAGUE, January 2. A powerful new wireless station at Melnik will begin next week broadcasting in the German language for the German-speaking districts of Czechoslovakia.
