TEMUKA

SUCCESSFUL QUEEN CARNIVAL MORE THAN £BOO RAISED All expectations of the Temuka Queen Carnival Central Committee were exceeded when the final count of votes to decide the placings of the three candidates revealed that £B2O had been returned by the three participating committees. Tire Basketball Queen (Miss Dorothy Bisdee) topped the poll with 50.519 votes, while the Caledonian Queen (Miss Maureen Coffey) was second with 31,488, and Miss Dorothy Laurenson. the Domain candidate, third with 16,342. There was a sensational finish to the polling, the representatives of the basketball committee handing in more than £3OO worth cf votes as the poll was closing and moving their candidate from bottom place to top. Throughout the earlier weeks of the campaign there had been close rivalry and each of the queens had topped the poll at various times. When the last count was made before the gala the position was that Domain led with Caledonian second and Basketball third. After the half-hourly counts started yesterday afternoon people anxiously looked for changes, but all that happened up to 3.30 was that the Caledonian flag changed places with the Domain colour at the third clearing of the boxes. Basketball remained at the bottom and that was the order after the fourth count. Then came the last ballot which completely changed the order.

Proceeds to hand after 3.30 p.m. yesterday were to be pooled and equally divided, so it is probable that the gross profit from the carnival will be in excess of £B2O when all expenses have been met. At the instigation of the Caledonian Society the carnival was started three months ago. it being agreed that the gross profit would be equally divided among the competing bodies. The Domain Board has already stated that its share will be spent on the provision of a glasshouse for the Domain, but the intention of the other two bodies are not yet known.
