VITAL STATISTICS

MORE BIRTHS LAST YEAR A total of 23 more births were registered in Timaru last year than was the case in 1936, according to returns compiled by the Registrar of births, deaths and marriages, and there were nine fewer deaths in the same period. January of last year provided the largest crop of babies, 50 being registered while 48 were born in November. The month in which the smallest number of registrations took place was March with 27.

By a coincidence exactly the same number of marriage licenses were issued last year as during 1936, but one more ceremony was performed by the Registrar. Details are as follows:

DUNEDIN By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, January 1 The last year established a record in the number of marriages registered in Dunedin, the total of 1023 showing an increase of 131 on the figures for 1936 and surpassing the previous record of 915 in 1920. Deaths for the year totalled 1047, compared with 1012 in 1936, and births 1392 compared with 1350 the previous year. CHRISTCHURCH By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, January 1 The vital statistics for Christchurch during the last year show record figures for marriages and that the death toll was almost as heavy as in the epidemic year of 1918. Marriages totalled 1479 compared with last year’s record number of 1413. This was in addition to 257 marriages in the registry office which also exceeded the previous record of 246 in 1920. Deaths totalled 1621 compared with the epidemic year’s total of 1657 in 1918. There were more births last year than for any year since 1930, the record figures being established in 1920.
