Sultry weather was experienced for the third day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslie today. The attendance was 18,750, compared with 15,500 on New Year’s Day last year. The track was easy after rain overnight. The totalisator handled £67,805, compared with £56,159/10/- on the same day last year, an increase of £11,645/10/-. In a bunched finish Gay Rose won by a length from Kelly, who was half a length ahead of Wild Chase. Padishah was fourth followed by Wotan, Cerne Abbas, Argentic, Jonathan and Knight of Australia.
