COURTCRAFT’S DERBY GAY ROSE PREVAILS IN HANDICAP By Telegraph—Press association AUCKLAND. January 1. Sultry weather was experienced for the third day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslie today. The attendance was 18,750, compared with 15,500 on New Year’s Day last year. The track was easy after rain overnight. The totalisator handled £67,805, compared with £56,159/10/- on the same day last year, an increase of £11,645/10/-. Won by a length, half a length between second and third. Time—2min 36sec. Jonathan, Knight of Australia, Wild Chase and Sinking Fund set a slow starting pace. Knight of Australia and Kelly soon took the lead together, making the running into the straight from Jonathan, Wild Chase and Sinking Fund bunched ahead of Gay Rose, Argentic, Cerne Abbas and Padishah. In a bunched finish Gay Rose won by a length from Kelly, who was half a length ahead of Wild Chase. Padishah was fourth followed by Wotan, Cerne Abbas, Argentic, Jonathan and Knight of Australia.

Courtcraft and Aero King were first out and the former was never headed. Along the back he showed the way to The Crooner, Aero King, Royal Chief and Saccone. Entering the straight Courtcraft was just clear of The Crooner, with Royal Chief making an effort. Courtcraft finished on with three lengths to spare, The Crooner being another 24 lengths away.
