PRISONER’S CHANGE OF HEART By Telegraph—Press Association WHANGAREI, November 30. Maraea Heke, a Maori woman, who gained considerable notoriety in the far north when she failed to appear in the Kaitaia Court to answer a charge of pulling and destroying survey pegs, and who was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on the charge of pulling and burning parts of a bridge, applied yesterday for a rehearing of the latter charge. The application was granted by Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., and the case was heard this morning when the accused admitted the charge. The Magistrate asked whether, having spent a few days In gaol, the accused felt Inclined to defy the law, and she replied she would have nothing further to do with the question, and would not cause any more trouble. The Magistrate, stating that there appeared to be a genuine change of heart, reduced the gaol sentence to probation for 12 months.
