RUMOURS AFLOAT
ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, November 25. When the House met this afternoon, Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Nationalist, Waitomo) asked an urgent question whether there was any truth in a statement being freely circu'ated that the Government had been forced to send an rudit inspector to investigate certain excessive and improper payments being made in certain Public Works contracts at Greymou'h. Mr said it was alleged that payments had been made for work done far in excess of the total payments which could have been earned if tl e equipment lid been worked to its fullest capacity. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in reply, sr v ’ the Government did not send an audit inspector to Greymouth to investigate excessive and improper payments. An Inspector of the Audit Department while making his usual audit of accounts in the Greymouth district discovered what he believed tu be irregularities. The matter was now being thoroughly investigated by the Audit Department.
