THE UPPER HOUSE

SEVERAL BILLS PASSED By Telegraph—Preea Association WELLINGTON, November 25. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. When the Whangarel Airport Bill was discussed in committie, the Hon. T. Bloodworth moved to amend clause 17 to make in mandatory that the board should be represented on committees given delegated powers. The provision opposed by Mr Bloodworth was containued in a sub-olause which stated: "It shall not be necessary that any person appointed to be a member of the committee under this section shall be a member of the board." An amendment was proposed to strike out the word "not” and alter “any person” to "one or more of the persons.” The amendment was carried after

the Hon, B. Martin, who was in charge | of the BUI, had said there was no' objection to the amendment, but it would delay the passage of the —ill I and consequently he would not accept I it, but would leave it to the decision of the Council. The Hop. W. Pepry suggested that ■ the amended sub-clause should be redrafted as follows: “On any committee appointed under the last preceding _

sub-section there shall be at least one ' member of the board." The sub-sec-tion was struck out and the suggested new one adopted. The Bill was read a third time and passed. Other measures put through their cor-.mittee stages without amendment and passed were the Coal Mines Amendment Bill, Sales of Wool Bill, Dunedin District Drainage and |

Sewerage Amendment Bill, Timaru Harbour Board Loan Amendment Bill, and Christchurch Tramway Board Empowering Bill. The Finance Bill was read a first time. Oysters are now being bred successfully in tanks in England, after experiments carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture continuously since 1919.
