ROAD RACE

CHRISTCHURCH TO TIMARU SATURDAY’S EVENT For the first time for about 26 years Timaru will see the finish of a big road cycle race, when the Christchurch to Timaru contest takes place on Saturday. Eighty-three riders will take part this year, including many leading wheelmen from Christchurch and the North Island, and a keen finish may be seen.

The race will finish this year on the Caledonian Grounds, where the riders will circle the track once before crossing the finishing line on the grass straight. Athletic contests will be held during the afternoon by the amateur club, Including an inter-house meeting. Spectators will also see a pipe band display. Handicaps for the big race are :

TIMARU CLUB At a meeting of the Timaru Cycling Club, arrangements were discussed for the running of the championship race, on December 11 from the Carlton Hotel to Waimate and back. The race is endowed with the following prize list.— First prize, £2 and Parfitt Cup to be won outright; second, £l/10/- and cup; third, 15/- and trophy; fourth, trophy; fastest time, £2 and championship ribbon; second fastest time, miniature cup; youngest rider, trophy. A vote of thanks was passed to the patroness of the club, Mrs J. Parfitt, for her generous donation of a championship cup. Arrangements for the mystery picnic ride were left in the hands of the secretary.
