GERMANS IN BRITAIN
“THINNING OUT” LIKELY The number of Germans resident in Britain who have no obvious reason for their presence here is likely to be "thinned out” by the Home Office in the immediate future, states the “Daily Express.” Those whose names are receiving attention include Germans who describe themselves as “journalists.” What is alleged against them is not naval or military spying, but undesirable political activity among other Germans permanently resident in Britain. Orders have been given to the special branch of Scotland Yard and to the Home Office authorities that this activity must be stopped and those responsible asked to leave the country. Investigations are also being made into the activities of some of the German and Austro-German girls employed as maidservants in this country.
A number of them have obtained employment in the homes of naval, military, and air force officers.
In one recent instance a German maidservant employed in a British home close to a large flying field met non-commissioned officers serving there.
The girl wrote letters to her friends in which she told of her association with the airmen, and mentioned air defences. The girl has since left this country. It has been found that young German women have been employed as typists and translators in offices of large commercial undertakings, and, possibly unwittingly, they have betrayed important commercial secrets to those hr charge of the Nazi “sifting house.”
