AMATEUR ATHLETICS SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING The Waimate Amateur Athletic Club successfully opened the season with the first of a series of evening meetings on Thursday. The meeting was conducted under good conditions and attracted a number of spectators. The number of entries for the various events points to a revival of enthusiasm in athletics, and augurs well for a successful season. Points System In an endeavour to stimulate a sustained Interest in athletics this season, the club has instituted a points contest over a series of meetings in place of the former trophy meetings. For the purpose of the contest, the various events have been divided up into five groups, to each of which from one to three trophies will be allocated, according to the number of competitors taking part. The groups have been arranged as follows: (1) Sprinting, including all events up to 440 yards; (2) distance running; (3) Jumps; (4) field events; (5) cycle races. Three points are to be allotted for first in each event, tyro for second, and one for third. The aggregate points for the series will count for trophies in each section.

The following evening meetings have been scheduled: November 18: 75 yards, 880 yards, putting the shot, long jump, half mile, and 2 mile cycling. November 25: 100 yards, 1000 yards, javelin throw, high jump, cycle races. December 2: 120 yards, one mile, hammer throw, high jump, cycle races. December 9: 220 yards, 880 yards, putting the shot, long jump, cycling. December 16: 75 yards, 440 yards, one mile, javelin throw, high jump, cycling. December 23: 100 yards, 1000 yards, throwing the hammer, hop, step and jump, cycling. An inter-club meeting is set down to be held in Waimate on December 11, when competitors from Timaru and Temuka will compete against selected teams from Waimate. HOOK W.D.F.U. Mrs Todd presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Hook Branch of the W.D.F.U. The roll call was “Saving hints.” During the afternoon a demonstration was given by Mrs Mackenzie of Hunter in egg shell work and crazy decorating.
