CRACK CYCLISTS

PROPOSED VISIT TO TIMARU FURTHER INQUIRIES TO BE MADE Doubts as to the advisability of bringing two Australian cyclists to New Zealand to compete at the New Year sports were expressed at a meeting of directors of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society last night. Present: Messrs N. Burns (president), J. Glass, S. F. Hanson, E. J. Fairbrother, T. G. Jacobs, F. Triggs, C. E. Hall, W. H. Hall, R. A. Rodgers, R Munro, M. H. Richards, S. R. Bums, H. Fraser, R. Oliphant and J. Davey. In reply to the Society’s inquiries for support in its proposal, the Mataura Caledonian Society advised that it was unable to fall in with the suggestion. Awamoko expressed its willingness to co-operate and offered £5 appearance money. It was pointed out that the track was only a temporary one but no complaints had been received regarding it. At a previous meeting advice was received that the Waimate Caledonian Society was in favour of the project. No reply had come to hand from Mr L. Hill (Melbourne) as to whether any cyclists had been engaged, reported the secretary.

In view of the shortness of time available to make arrangements, said Mr W. H. Hall, a reply-paid cable should be sent inquiring what had been done. As there seemed little prospect of obtaining support from other bodies there was little use in bringing the cyclists to New Zealand, said Mr Rodgers. It would not be fair to the riders to bring them over for fewer than five or six meetings, he said. A proposal to cancel the project was defeated and it was decided to send a cable Immediately to ascertain what arrangements had been made. In the meantime, an effort is to be made to obtain the co-operation of other societies.

The New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association advised that it had allotted the following events to the Society for its sports: New Zealand Highland fling under 18, New Zealand sword dance under 14, South Island piping, strathspeys and reels (all comers). Mr W. Bell (Timaru) wrote accepting the position of judge of dancing at the New Year sports meeting.
