PLEASANT POINT

TOWN BOARD The Pleasant Point Town Board held a special meeting on Monday evening. There were present: Messrs M. F. Maze (chairman), T. Kelliher, A. H. Roberts, E. Halstead and W. Grant. The Board signed an agreement bi which it pledged itself to fall in line with other local bodies in connection with the Downlands Water Supply scheme. The agreement was signed, however, with a proviso that it was subject to any alterations or amendments that might be found advisable and might be agreed upon with the Public Works Department.

A letter was received from the Commission which is to consider the question of local body amalgamation, asking whether the Board wished to take the opportunity of making any representations to it, and asking that it reply before November 18. All the members of the Board were emphatic that any attempt to absoro the Board and township into the Geraldine or Waimate Counties should be resisted.

The chairman: If the main road is taken as the boundary between tha new Waimate and Geraldine counties, and Pleasant Point is absorbed into them, then one half of Pleasant Point would be in Geraldine and the other half in Waimate.

Mr Kelliher: We will have to prevent that at all costs.

The chairman; Moreover if amalgamation takes place the rates will almost certainly be raised, and the township would not receive nearly so much attention from a remote governing authority as it gets now. Mr Grant: It is clear that what ver way one looks at the matter Pleasant Point would stand to lose by amalgamation.

It was resolved that the Board, in reply to the letter, ask for an opportunity to express its views on the principles and provisions of the Amalgamation Bill, and point out that it considers that it would not be to the advantage of the township to amalgamate with any other authority.
