SCHOOL TO BE REMODELLED ’ On Saturday afternoon the Minister : of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) ■ I visited the school and, accompanied ' by Messrs J. R. Trimble (chairman of ’ the School Committee), H. Bannerman (headmaster), W. Cague, I. Dempsey, ■ E. D. Hoskin. R. C. Russell (members ' of the committee), G. J. King (presi--1 dent of the St. Andrews branch of ! the Labour Party), J. J. Dickson (member of the Waimate County Council), and • the Rev. A. McNeur, thoroughly inspected the buildings. The Minister, said the job was a bigger one than he imagined, and he expressed surprise at the bad condition of the school and residence. The remodelling project was a good one, and should be proceeded with at once. He congratulated the committee on its good fortune in having such an able representative as Mr D. Barnes, M.P.. to plead its cause. Mr C. W. Armitage (Canterbury Education Board) expressed his pleasure that the visit of the Minister would result in effecting greatly needed improvements, which the Board had long advocated. The Minister and his party were entertained at afternoon tea. Mrs Mills, president of the Women’s Institute and group convener, brought under the notice of the Minister the question of adult education, and Mr G. J. King asked about the national libraries. Mr Fraser, in reply, said he could not pay high enough tributes to the present work being carried out by the Women’s Institutes, Women’s Divisions of the Farmers’ Union, and A.C.E.. W.E.A. and Drama League. It was the aim of the national libraries to send out to the country districts the best and latest books. CRIBBAGE EVENING The weekly cribbage evening held by the Pareora School Committee was well attended. The prizes, given by Mrs Koens, were won by Miss Betty Pratt and Mr Whitticase. PERSONAL Messrs A. Thompson and W. Hurst, Pareora. have left on a motor tour of Central Otago and Southland.
