“THE DAY IS GONE”
NEW PLAY BY FORMER NEW ZEALANDER PRESENTATION IN LONDON LONDON, September 15. “The Day is Gone” is the title of a new play which was put on at the Embassy Theatre, London, this week. Its author is Mr W. Chetham-Strode, member of a family well known in the South Island of New Zealand a number of years ago, and he receives considerable praise for an idea cleverly worked out and psychologically convincing up to a point. Mr Nicholas Hannen and Miss Angela Baddeley have the opportunity of some fine acting, and Mr H. Hilliard has some good comedy as an actor-lodger. The theme of the play seems to be an attempt to bring sympathy for an undoubted but sorely-tried murderer. He was a quiet, gentle-souled chemist, named Stanley (Mr Hannen), driven almost to madness by a nagging and spiteful wife -(Miss Sybil Grove). He was also tempted by being in love with a Yorkshire girl, Rosie (Miss Angela Baddeley), who took a great interest in his literary pursuits and his painting. The play develops finally into a
tragedy when Stanley confesses to Rosie, whom he marries, that he had killed his first wife. It is expected thaj "The Day is Gone” will be brought to a West End theatre. Many successful plays have been first tried out at the Embassy.
